The word "jackfruit" comes from Portuguese jaca. In malayalm jackfruit is known as "chakka". Malayalam word "puzhukku" means steamed. This is a staple diet during summers in most homes, when jackfruit is available. Raw jackfruit is considered healthier than ripe jackfruit.
1) Jackfruit weighing approximately 5 kg. ,would give 1250 grams of cleaned jackfruit with seeds.
2) Mature jackfruit is used. It should neither be too small or tender nor ripe.
3) Adjust chillies according to your spice tolerance level.

1) Cut jackfruit into strips.
2) Slice jackfruit seeds also. Do not remove the brown skin of the seeds as it has medicinal value.
3) Mix jackfruit slices with seeds, salt & turmeric powder. Add very little water. a sprinkling of water will also do.
4) Coarsely grind coconut with shallots, garlic, green chillies and cumin seeds.
5) Keep the coconut mixture on top of jack fruit mix.
6) Cook on a low flame with lid on till done.
7) When cooked, mix in curry leaves and coconut oil.
Serve hot with pickle on side. It can also be had with rice.
