Description

In kerala, South India, Cherupayar (green gram) curry is a combination breakfast with puttu or rice steam cakes. Green gram is available in many forms including whole, split, de-husked (yellow) and ground. Split moong beans or green moong dal is green gram that has been split but not skinned.Green gram is a good source of protein. It is easily digestible and soft in texture once cooked.

Note

1) Tempering in ghee gives a good flavor.
2) Add water to curry according to the desired thickness of the gravy.
3) I used green gram soaked overnight. If not soaked, a longer cooking time will be required.

To grind

Tempering
1  Tsp.Mustard seeds
2  No.sRed chillies, dried
2  Tsp.Coconut oil / ghee
2  SprigsCurry leaves
1  Tbsp.Shallots, sliced
1  Tsp.Garlic, sliced

Method

1) Cook green gram with salt, turmeric powder and chilli powder in a pressure cooker for a whistle.
2) Grind coconut,cumin and green chillies together to form a paste.
3) Add the ground paste to cooked gram and add enough water and bring to a boil. Add water according to the consistency of the gravy you will need.
4) Heat ghee or oil. Splutter mustard seeds. Add broken red chillies, shallots, garlic and curry leaves. Fry till shallots are golden brown. Remove from fire and pour over the curry.

Serving Suggestions

Serve warm. A good combination with puttu. Can also be had with chappathy.
