Jeera rice is a simple rice dish consisting of rice and cumin seeds. This rice dish is also known as "Zeera rice". Jeera or zeera is the Hindi word for cumin. It is popular in the North of India.
This dish is popular in Pakistan also.
1) The quantity of water mentioned here is for a nicely aged Basmati rice. If the rice is not aged well, it will turn mushy soon.
2) Do not wash rice after soaking, the grains will break.
3) Butter can be substituted with ghee/ clarified butter. Can omit oil and instead ghee or butter can be used.

1) Wash rice well and soak in water for 20 minutes.
2) Boil water and keep aside. Soak saffron in 1 tablespoon of hot water.
3) Heat oil and butter together. Add cumin seeds and let it splutter.
4) Add onions and chillies and fry onions till golden brown.
5) Add boiled water. Let it come to a boil with salt to taste.
6) Add rice , saffron and half of corriander leaves chopped. Reduce fire to minimum. Cover with a lid and let it cook. When all the water is absorbed, put off fire and fluff the rice with a fork.
Serve hot with any gravied curry and a raita.
